Bezel-less screens aren't new, what's different is how Samsung, Xiaomi et al are approaching them now
Samsung has been religiously attempting to slaughter the bezel since 2014. Just prior, it sort of limited these tricks to one arrangement, the Galaxy Edge to be exact. With the Note 7, it attempted to standard the idea just to be looked foot in mouth up some other time. The Note 7, as is commonly said, is history.
